Bach Festival 9 | March 2025

March 17-24, 2025

The Jerusalem Baroque Orchestra presents the ninth Bach Festival:
Christmas Oratorio and a variety of concerts celebrating the greatest Baroque composer – Johann Sebastian Bach

Between March 17 and 24, the Jerusalem Baroque Orchestra will stage the ninth edition of the Bach Festival—an annual flagship event that brings Bach’s greatest masterpieces to the stages of Jerusalem and Israel. The festival will also feature the works of composers who influenced Bach, those he influenced, and contemporary musicians whose works clearly bear his imprint.

The festival shows

"Bach’s Inspiration" – The Generations Before Bach
Monica Schwartz | Soprano Doron Schleifer | Countertenor Noam Gal | Violin Sonia Navot | Viola da gamba Guy Pardo | Organ and harpsichord Alma Meir-Nir | Cornet, recorder, dulcian, musical direction
The festival’s opening concert presents the works of Johann Rosenmüller and Heinrich Schütz, composers who inspired Bach. A rarely heard instrument, the cornetto, which resembles both a trumpet and the human voice, takes center stage. Alma Meir-Nir, Israel’s only cornetto player, will lead the program.

The Festival’s Central Concert – "The Christmas Oratorio"
The Jerusalem Baroque Orchestra Andrew Parrott | conductor Keren Motseri (Holland - Israel) | Soprano Nitzan Alon | Alto David Nortman (Canada-Israel) | Tenor Guy Pelc | Bass
At the heart of the festival is a performance of one of Bach’s greatest and most significant vocal works—The Christmas Oratorio (Cantatas No. 1, 5, and 6). This masterpiece cemented Bach’s status as a first-rate composer during his time and established his role as Leipzig’s city cantor. The grand epic begins with triumphant trumpets and timpani and continues with breathtaking arias, performed by Keren Motseri (Netherlands-Israel, soprano), Nitzan Alon (alto), David Nortman (tenor), and Guy Pelc (bass), conducted by Andrew Parrott (UK), the orchestra’s honorary conductor.
